INSIDIOUS
5 Deliciously Dark stars
The first point I need to make about this novel is the writing. Aleatha Romig writes with a style that is second to none. She immediately draws you in with her mysterious and intriguing way with words. My curiosity was piqued and my urges were heightened before the 10% mark.
"He couldn't have been more wrong. Sainthood was not in my future. Well, unless the devil had an apprenticeship program. Unfortunately for him I'd been a very good student."
My second point is that I was nervous. Yes I was nervous to read this but also extremely excited. The nerves came from knowing how I felt whilst reading Aleatha's previous fantastic work and I just knew she was going to mess with my head. Would this be a cliffhanger? Would I get answers? These questions were swirling around in my head along with thoughts of the past of how 'The Consequences' series made me feel. Yet like a drug it was addicting and my safety for my own sanity was dispelled from the very first page.
"He spread my arousal on his lips and licked. "Just a taste of sweetness." His eyes shimmered. "Later, I'll dine."
This novel creeped me out at the expectancies to come but it was also highly arousing. I believe it's one of Aleatha's tricks. I would be cringing at one point and at the next I would be clenching my thighs together and adjusting myself in my seat. She's a master of trickery and loves to play with your mind and your body! At the halfway mark things were taking a change and my intuitions were on fire. Would it be? Could it be? Why?
"I'm not pressuring you. It's just that I wanted you to know I've wanted to be the only man in your life for a long time. I want it even more now."
The quote above seems so tender, it seems kind and heartwarming but I didn't trust it. The trouble was I was still in the dark, the mystery of the situation left me not trusting one damn person. A race to the end was in store and would I find my answers?.
Vik was an incredibly strong woman who was clearly made to suffer mentally and physically, the demands on her were quite horrific but she always came back from the horrors of her situation stronger than each time before. She kicked ass to the best of her ability and one thing I really liked about her was her sharp tongue. Her derogatory comments were superb and I found myself re-reading them with a smirk on my face. Truly magnificent writing. In my humble opinion Aleatha is one of the best in her field, she does not write about fluff and fancies she writes about grit and courage.
This is lengthy, mysterious and dark, there are many revelations and you need the ability to concentrate but I have no doubts in my mind that you will be drawn to Vik. You will envision certain persons and places exactly the way she does. Your senses will be heightened just like hers are.
I was absolutely buzzing at the end, I literally sat with my mouth open, then a smile crept onto my face and I grinned with pleasure. No cliffhanger and a perfect finish.
Now all I need you to do is 'Nod if you understand.' …..
