Beach Picnic Chat between Jo (Four Brits), Kel (Kelly’s Kindle Konfessions) and Maz (Surrender to Books)
So we’re sat here sunning ourselves on the beach. Ok actually we are freezing to death (we are in the UK after all), sat with fifteen layers on each, a rainmac and a windbreaker wrapped around us. Still it’s as authentic as we can get!
Maz - So what did you bring us to eat?
Jo - Sausage rolls and sandwiches from Tesco okay?
Kelly: I'm all about the dessert so I've brought us a triple choc fudge cake mmmm.
Jo - Amazing. So, scene set. Let's talk about Shadow and Dani! That ending to What Doesn't Destroy Us!! Certainly made me eager to start on The Scars That Define Us. And I wasn't disappointed!
Kelly - I totally fell in love with Shadow in What Doesn't Destroy us, so I for one was ready for more Shadow- but I was worried he wouldn't be the same man after that epic ending.
Maz - I love Bobby - I’m so happy we get more of him in this book. I never wanted Bobby with Dani, that’s not what I’m saying, just that he’s such an uber sweet guy to both Shadow and Dani and I want a lot more of him.
Jo - I'm a Shadow fan through and through! So, whereas some may not like the way he dealt with certain situations I was right there with him. Feeling his pain.
Maz - I think his background totally explains how he deals with extreme situations. His family is all kinds of fucked up, and then he became part of the club, so he doesn’t know what normal is, to be able to act it.
Jo - That is what made my heart ache for him. I desperately wanted him to have his HEA but at the end of the first book, was it ever going to happen?
Kelly: I get all that with Shadow, but he was a complete arse at times during this book - at times I was not a Shadow Fan.
Maz - I didn’t think he was a bigger asshole this time around than last, he had his moments in both books. But he would do anything for Dani, as he proved quite dramatically in this part of their story.
Jo - He made me swoon all over again! I liked that we saw a more in depth version of Bobby in this book. And *that* bit in the book? My heart stopped.
Kelly: I messaged MN Forgy when I got to that bit.....I was speechless !!!!
Maz - Not something that happens often with you Kel!!!
Kelly : No lol - I did find lots of this book made me feel that way, it was gritty, raw and at times cruel, but that's what makes it so compelling.
Jo - I love a good MC book for its grit and downright dirt. But it's got to have an air of humanity in it and we saw that in Dani. Even though I loved her dark side, she played her part perfectly. Loved her badassery!
Maz - I was just about to ask what you both thought about Dani. I loved the two sides to her personality and how she wasn’t bothered about her dark side. So often we see people who are supposedly tortured by their dark side. But we all have it in us, and I think in the right extreme circumstances, you would find that you could totally justify a bit of bad behaviour. Of course, I prefer the bad behaviour she gets up to with Shadow ;)
Kelly : I'm never a big fan of the female leads in most books, often too wishy washy cry babies but I loved Dani, especially her bad ass side when she stood up to the club whore. Bloody priceless!
And her antics with Shadow are enough to set my knickers on fire!!!!
Jo - Of course you do, Maz! Who wouldn't? He is everything I love in a biker. Buff, tattooed, brooding and deeply troubled. The complex to save him in me screams to me. And damn, if I don't want to be on the back of his bike with his hand curling around my thigh behind him. *sigh*
Kelly, I enjoyed how Dani became more a part of the club, with the Old Ladies as well as the boys. Well, except Locks.
Maz - I want to be on top of the dresser!
Kelly : Don't we all Maz! Or against a wall mmmmmm.
Jo - No, we're not going to talk of our hatred for Locks, just carry on sexing it up with Shadow? Fine with me!
Maz - But sex with Shadow is much more fun, than talking about Locks and his level of toolness Jo!
Jo - lets scrap the first part of the review and just talk Sex with Shadow!!
Kelly : why not that works for me!! Sex with Shadow wearing his cut and nothing else.
Jo - It's heating up in here now, ladies! I think we've covered that there's hot sex in the book!!
Maz - Erm sorry ladies, I need to go somewhere. Erm, I have something to attend to, lol. It’s a great story alongside the sex though.
Kelly : while Maz is mmm busy, I want to go back to the ol' ladies of the Devils Dust MC Club, I loved all these ladies especially Babs and Cherry. Loved how they were strong enough to take matters into their own hands, not relying on their men to sort out their shit.
Jo - A cold shower perhaps, Maz?! But yes, I agree the storyline is amazing, one I've not come across before and from the end of the Book 1 and throughout Book 2 I was thrilled to see the next development in the issues that had arisen between the club and further afield. And I must say, the prologue to Book 3 - The Fear That Divides Us - makes me crave more of those Devil's Dust boys already!
And the ladies, Kelly you're right, learning more about the Old Ladies made me realise how much they have their own stories and their own lives outside of what the men do. They really don't just sit around waiting for them to come back from a "run"!
Maz - I can’t wait for book 3 - I really want the backstory of the female lead. She really intrigues me. I’m guessing we’ll get even more of the other Old Ladies in the coming books. Maybe even find out more about their extra activities.
For me this book had everything, steam, love, betrayal, ultimate acts of sacrifice and hidden relationships and agendas.
Jo - I know The Scars That Define Us isn't even out yet, but do we know when The Fear That Divides Us is due out? Hah!! I agree, Maz, this book had everything you'd expect from an MC book and more. It's refreshing to have a book that leaves you guessing, reeling and needing more. Amazing writing, a definite love-and-hate relationship with the characters and an overall well thought out storyline & continuation to what is promising to be a very popular series for me.
Kelly : For me Book 1 is the Calm before the storm and the Scars stirs up one hell of a ffffing Storm.
One of the best MC books this year without a doubt !
Rating Ladies!
Maz ***** slam me against the dresser stars
Jo - 5 stars for me! Shadow's Property all the way! He can ride with me anytime! ;)
