Alexa Holland's father was her hero-until her shocking discovery. Ever since, Alexa has worked to turn her life in a different direction and forge her own identity outside of his terrible secrets. But when she meets a man who's as damaged by her father's mistakes as she is, Alexa must help him.
Caine Carraway wants nothing to do with Alexa's efforts at redemption, but it's not so easy to push her away. Determined to make her hate him, he brings her to the edge of her patience and waits for her to walk away. But his actions only draw them together and, despite the odds, they begin an intense and all-consuming affair.
Only Caine knows he can never be the white knight that Alexa has always longed for, and when they're on the precipice of danger, he finds he'll do anything to protect either one of them from being hurt again . . .
I'll start by saying, Samantha Young just smashed it out of the park yet again, is there nothing this woman can't write? I devoured this in just a couple of sittings, it would've been less if work didn't get in the way! Caine is a bossy, arrogant, moody alpha male but you know what? I fell for him and I fell hard. Lexie annoyed me at times with her I'm gonna leave him, no I'm gonna keep trying attitude but if I'm honest she's so typical of a lot of women, me included. She saw something within Caine and wouldn't rest until she'd opened it up. Now you can call her needy and say she has no self worth but what I see is the strength she has within. She knows she's worthy of Caine and she knows she doesn't deserve to be treated the way she is. She sees a broken man and wants to fix him, she puts her feelings aside in an attempt to right the wrongs of their past and create a future, even though her heart is breaking right in front of us.
There was plenty of drama to keep me hooked throughout the book, least of all the game of cat and mouse between Lexie and Caine. What I wasn't expecting was to feel so emotionally involved. With every knock-back Lexie received the lump in my throat got harder to swallow, I really felt bad for her and at times humiliated. When she was angry I got angry, when she was happy, I smiled. It really did feel as if this was unfolding before my eyes more than just in a book, I was totally invested in the outcome.
Samantha also created some amazing side characters in Henry and Effie, they lightened up the book with their humour and left me desperately wanting more, especially from Henry he really was a cheeky chappie and I'd love more of him.
All in all I loved is offering from Samantha, I can't wait to see what she brings to the table next.
